Course outline

This course prepares students for entry into professional speech pathology practice. Speech pathologists assess and treat adults and children exhibiting acquired or congenital disorders of speech, fluency, voice, language and swallowing and multimodal communication. The course aims to educate students to become knowledgeable, skilled, empathetic, ethical and innovative professionals. The course contains industry-specific and inter-professional units of study. A mix of theory units are combined with simulated learning and clinical practicum opportunities. Students have access to modern laboratories and clinical learning spaces. Embedded throughout the course are principals of critical thinking, evidence-based practice and cultural competency. Teaching facilities include computer-assisted technologies and simulation and clinical laboratories. Students complete approximately 1000 hours of professional placement in various settings. Before undertaking clinical placements, students must fulfil certain prerequisites including vaccination against specific diseases (note a full course of vaccination may take several months), a criminal record check and working with children clearance, and completion of a nationally accredited first aid certificate; refer to Southern Cross University for details.

Additional entry requirements

Applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency to a level required by the institution. Applicants from a non-English speaking background require a minimum IELTS of 8.0 overall with a minimum score of 8.0 in each of the four components. Refer to the institution for more information.
