Course outline

This program is for graduates with non-Education bachelor degrees wanting to qualify to teach disciplines in secondary schools. For admission, your bachelor degree disciplines must align with the current subject offerings of Queensland schools.

In this program you will build on existing subject knowledge with discipline-specific courses preparing you for the classroom. You’ll assess students’ learning needs, design lesson plans and manage a diverse classroom. You will complete Supervised Professional Experience in three blocks, totalling 60 days of practice teaching, with opportunity to gain experience rurally and remotely.

You’ll also attend ongoing professional development seminars and employment forums and meet with employer representatives, The Queensland College of Teachers, teacher unions and international recruiters.

It is no longer a requirement that students in Master of Teaching (Secondary) are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Other requirements

Students complete 60 days of supervised professional experience. Students must undergo a criminal history check and obtain a Suitability Card (Blue Card) before the first professional learning experience; refer to institution. Students undertaking an Initial Teacher Education (ITE) program are required to undertake and meet the benchmark in the National Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Educators. The Inherent Academic Requirements of a program are those fundamental skills, capabilities and knowledge that students must be able to demonstrate in order to achieve the essential learning outcomes of the program, while maintaining the academic integrity of that program. Additional entry requirements

To satisfy the prior study prerequisite, completion of a non-education bachelor’s degree (AQF Level 7) or equivalent, with a minimum GPA of 4.0 from a recognised tertiary institution, is required.

In addition, applicants must also satisfy the discipline study requirements of at least six courses (approx. 12 credit points each) in a nominated first teaching area and four courses (approx. 12 credit points each) in a nominated second teaching area.

Teaching Area One and Teaching Area Two need to be from contrasting subject areas or different discipline areas and contain no more than 2 introductory courses in each area.

Applicants must nominate on their QTAC application a minimum of two teaching areas in preferred order.

Physical Education, Health or Health and Physical Education (only one teaching area)

History (only one teaching area)

Science (up to two teaching areas; may include Agricultural Science, Biology, Chemistry, Marine Science, Physics, Psychology, Earth and Environmental science)

Arts (up to two teaching areas; may include Drama, Dance, Film Television and New Media, Music, Visual Arts)

Technologies# (only one teaching area; may include Design# or Digital Solutions#)

Business# (only teaching area, may also include Accounting#, Economics#, or Legal Studies#)

Languages# (only one teaching area, may include Chinese#, French#, German#, Indonesian#, Italian#, Japanese#, or Spanish#).

#The following teaching areas are not available at UniSC Moreton Bay: Accounting, Business, Chinese, Design, Digital Solutions, Economics, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Legal Studies and Spanish.

Applicants from a non-English speaking background must attain an IELTS (Academic) overall score of at least 7.5 with a minimum of 8.0 in speaking and listening and 7.0 in all other subtests, obtained within two years prior to the commencement of the program.
